I used a strange spore at the start of round 40 and with 27 clerics, majority of my dudes were dead within 3 secs.

If you can replicate with a video, we may be able to narrow things down now.
However, it is most likely that there was some cleave from an event that lowered the health of some of your dudes, then the spores average out their health with everyone else's, then a secondary smack was enough to wipe you out.
