I posted this on Discord but was encouraged to share it here as well:
Recently, I just started playing this game on my iPad after trying the demo on Steam Deck. And while I prefer Steam for playing most of my games, I have to admit the touchscreen controls on iPad, make for much simpler and better experience currently than playing on my Steam Deck.
After signing in to Rumpus to save my progress between my devices, I checked Game Center and noticed that it showed I had earned an achievement (Boss Blaster) yet I have not completed a run (on iPad). Not sure if this is a bug or not… but it is interesting that it happened after the latest update when achievements were enabled.
Normally, I do not mind having acquired the achievements, but prefer to actually earn them from playing the game myself. And while I know I can reset progress from Settings myself, it does not reset Game Center achievements. I think it would be amazing if Butterscotch Shenanigans could address this issue and implement a feature (or another way on their end) to reset Game Center achievements. It would be so awesome and appreciated!!
Additional Information
I'll get this passed on to the team!
Thank you @bscotch042! I really appreciate you passing my feedback along to the team.
Hey there!
This achievement is just for beating round 20 (the first boss battle), so if you had played the game for a bit before checking your GameCenter achievements, you likely did indeed earn this achievement.
Boss battles occur every 20 rounds, so this is typically the first achievement most people earn.
I did play a the game for a bit but am pretty sure I did not get the far—I reset my progress several times trying different dudes at the start. Never beat any bosses. The achievement showed up when I opened the game on August 13 and I had not even played the game yet...
And I have not played again since resetting my progress. Hope this helps!
I wouldn't worry about this one, since this achievement occurs on round 20, which is typically in the first 10-15 minutes of gameplay on the first run for most people. Resetting achievements on GameCenter is quite involved and would require a game update with new features in the Settings UI, which would need to go through testing and localization, so it would take quite some time before a "reset achievements" button could be deployed. Given that this achievement is meant to be a "gimme" for players first starting out (it's just there to say "Hey! This game has achievements!"), hopefully it's acceptable if this achievement just stays unlocked for you.
Let us know if there are any strange behaviors with the other achievements
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I completely understand that adding a “reset achievements” feature would be a fairly significant undertaking, especially with the additional testing and localization that would be required. I certainly wouldn’t expect you to go through all of that just for my particular situation.
That said, I’m still a little disappointed that there doesn’t seem to be a way for me to start fresh with the achievements. I really enjoy the game, and part of the fun for me is earning the achievements myself as I progress through a new playthrough. Having that first achievement already unlocked takes away from that experience.
If implementing a universal reset feature isn’t practical, is there perhaps anything that can be done on an individual/account basis? I completely understand if Game Center doesn’t give you that kind of control, but I figured it was worth asking whether there’s anything you might be able to do from the developer side to clear or otherwise reset my achievement progress specifically.
I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this and explain the situation. I’m not trying to make too much extra work for you or cause frustration—I’d just really like to find a way to have a clean achievement slate if there’s any option available.
Unforunately, the only way Apple provides to reset these achievements (as far as we've been able to discern) is via an API call from within the game, which we would need to expose via patching in some kind of UI element for you to interact with. We'll put it on our radar for the big 1.1 update, but unfortunately we won't be able to do anything about it in the short term.
Thank you again for taking the time to look into this and for explaining how it works on your end! I really appreciate it, and I’m glad to hear that you’ll put it on your radar for the big 1.1 update. I’ll definitely be looking forward to it!
I did a little research myself and came across these pages in Apple’s developer documentation. I’m certainly no developer or game designer, so I don’t know how useful they’ll be or how much they apply to what you’re trying to accomplish, but I figured I’d pass them along in case they help:
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appstoreconnectapi/game-center-player-achievements
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/gamekit/rewarding-players-with-achievements
I completely understand that this would take development time and effort, and I really appreciate you considering it for the next major update. I’ve also played some other, simpler games—such as 'Math Trainer — Quick Questions'—that have implemented a way to reset achievements, so it gives me hope that it’s something that you can do as well. And if there’s anyone I’d trust to figure it out, it’s you guys at Butterscotch Shenanigans.
Thanks again for making such fun and awesome games, and especially for taking the time to respond to me and look into this. I really appreciate it!
