Levelhead

How can I get the game?

Levelhead is available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, the App Store, Google Play, the Microsoft Store, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox One. Prices may vary by region. Alternatively, you can get the game through Xbox Game Pass and Google Play Pass if you are a subscriber to those services!

We sometimes get asked why the mobile versions cost less than the non-mobile versions. The short answer is that prices are suppressed on mobile due to the fierce competition from free-to-play titles.

What languages does Levelhead support?

Levelhead supports 12 languages: English, Italian, Spanish (Spain + LATAM), Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, German, French, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Japanese, and Korean.

Does Levelhead have cross-play?

No matter what store or device you're using to play Levelhead, the levels you make and publish will be visible to all players on all platforms and your own progress and account data will be available and up to date everywhere. Connect your platform accounts to Rumpus to make signing into the same Rumpus account on each platform a breeze!

Is there a single player campaign?

There sure is! We have over 90 levels in the single-player campaign, which are meant to showcase a variety of level styles, mechanics, and building techniques. You can even unlock special Badges for your own levels through your accomplishments in the campaign!

Does Levelhead have real-time multiplayer?

Levelhead has same-screen co-op, with easy drop-in/drop-out gameplay for up to four players using controllers. Even though we designed the main campaign for single-player, your buddies can hop in and help you out, though that will often make things more difficult (and more hilarious). We even have co-op level editing!

Levelhead does not have online multiplayer, and we have no plans to add it. Instead, we will be putting development resources into adding core features to the game, like new items to build levels with.

How does Levelhead compare to other games in the genre?

The overarching goal of Levelhead is to acquire and deliver a package in every single level. This means the speed and style of levels is quite different from traditional platformers. It also means that you'll do quite a bit of throwing and carrying of all sorts of items - bombs, keys, other players, and the package itself.

The platforming pace is typically compared to games like Super Meat Boy or Celeste - it's quite fast and reactive. The power-ups are total game changers that allow for wild level building. And the robust switch system lets you build elaborate contraptions and essentially “program” your levels to change as the player progresses through them. In other words, Levelhead takes the “maker” genre and moves it in a new, deeper direction.

How do I get people to play my levels?

If you play other people's levels, you earn Exposure Bucks. Those Exposure Bucks can be put into your level or others you like and boost them up the charts in the Marketing Department, which gets your level seen by more people. You're also welcome to share your levels in the Level Sharing forum using the sharecode on your level.

You'll also be able to see the stats accumulated on your levels, like total plays and time spent playing your levels. It's great to see those numbers go up!

When you click on the sharecode of a level inside the game it will copy a link for that level that you can share outside the game. When others visit that URL they'll land on our website, where they'll be able to log in and then bookmark your level, causing it to appear in their bookmarks the list the next time they open the game. On console we can't copy that link for sharing -- you can create the link yourself using this template: https://levelhead.io/+YOUR_CODE (for example: https://levelhead.io/+2njlkjk for level sharecode 2njlkjk).

You can share your profile the same way using your Rumpus Lookup code using this template: https://levelhead.io/@LOOKUP_CODE (for example: https://levelhead.io/@bscotch101).

Can I play offline?

You can play Levelhead to your heart's content while offline on most platforms! Of course, to share your levels with other users, and play their levels in turn, you'll have to go online every once in a while. While online, you can download levels for offline play by turning on "Download Mode" in the game's settings.

Does the game support cloud saves?

It does, but we don’t use the built-in cloud saving of any specific platform (like Google or Steam). Instead, we use our own cloud system called Rumpus. This allows you to get access to your save file across all of your devices. So if you want to play on Xbox and then keep playing the same save on your iPhone, you can do that! All you need is a Rumpus account, which you can create inside the game. All of your essential progress is synced to Rumpus (if you log in!), along with up to three of your in-progress workshop levels.

Do I have to buy the game again on every platform I play it on?

If you want to play a version of the game from a specific store you'll have to buy it from that store, even if you've already bought the game somewhere else. Game stores do not generally allow purchases made in competing stores to be honored in their own. Fortunately, Levelhead's availability in subscription services at launch (Xbox Game Pass and Google Play Pass), and its lower price on mobile, make it more affordable to play on multiple platforms.

Can I change my Levelhead Alias?

You can change your Levelhead Alias in-game via the Settings. There is a cooldown on name changes, so it may not work right away. Note that it'll change immediately for you, but it may take a day or so before other players see the change!

How can I keep up with news about the game?

Just sign up for our feature-packed newsletter, the Bscotch Ballyhoo! You're also welcome to check the patch notes to keep your finger on the pulse of new developments. And last, you can always tune in to our weekly Game Dev Comedy podcast, Coffee with Butterscotch, where we talk about life, business, and working in the games industry.

Just go to your account and scroll down to the “Connections” section. There you can add additional platform accounts, all connected to your single Rumpus account. Once your accounts are linked, your game progress is accessible from any device!

For example, if you have logged in already using Steam, and you want to play on Nintendo Switch, first log into Rumpus using your Steam account. Then, at the "Connections" section, you would add your Nintendo Switch account. Once these two accounts are linked under Rumpus, you can log in to Rumpus with either account. We recommend linking all of your accounts in advance to make life easy later. We don't collect any personal data except your email address for account verification purposes.

After reverting a level it completely disappeared!

There is a rare bug where a reverted level doesn't appear in your workshop. We recently introduced a recovery mechanism via the website to prevent permanent data loss. If you have any recoverable levels, you'll find them on your website profile page.

I came back after playing for a while, and my save vanished!

We have numerous failsafes to protect your data, so it is possible that you accidentally logged on to a different account than you were playing on previously. Be sure to double check your account information and verify that you are logging in to the correct Rumpus account!

I can't figure out how to put my Workshop Levels into the cloud.

You can drag Levels around in your Workshop by clicking on their names. To move a Level into the cloud, just drag the level card and drop it into the Cloud slot! We are working on an update to this system to make it more obvious. Sorry for the confusion!

My controller doesn't work properly with my Android device.

Because there are nearly 20,000 different Android devices and thousands of different controllers, each combination of controller + Android device may have some quirks. Compatibility problems are due to some combination of your device, the controller, and Game Maker (our engine), and unfortunately we cannot resolve compatibility issues between specific devices and specific controllers.

Rumpus is rapidly going offline and back online.

Log out and back in via the in-game Rumpus menu to fix this issue.

This is due to your login session expiring since the last time you played, coupled with a game engine error that improperly handles that fact, causing the game to be unable to understand that your credentials are no longer valid. We're working with our game engine maker to deploy a fix, but until then logging out and back in will resolve the problem.

My Xbox Live Child Account cannot register for a Rumpus Account.

If the Child Account indicates that the child is under the age of 13, it is not qualified to use Rumpus service as required by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. If you set up the account as a child account by mistake, you can change the settings following this article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12411/microsoft-account-change-birthdate

After entering the password, I still can't use Sign in With Apple to log in to Rumpus.

This can occur if you recently made changes to your Apple ID account or your Face ID/Touch ID settings. First, Make sure that you are signed in to the App Store (or TestFlight if you are a beta tester) with the Apple ID that owns Levelhead. Then, do a soft reset by disabling and reenabling the Face ID/Touch ID in Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Last, relaunch the game, and you should now be able to sign in with Apple.

My game just shut down after I was playing for a while.

Some older iOS devices have less available RAM than what is ideal to run Levelhead well. In some particularly large levels, your device may not have enough power to handle all of the things the game is trying to do, which causes the device to simply shut the game down. We are always working to optimize the game, but in the meantime, we recommend ensuring that you shut down background applications while playing Levelhead to ensure your device has enough available RAM for the game.

I got the game from Microsoft Store but can't log into Rumpus!

If you keep getting the "Could not communicate with Rumpus" error when you log in, make sure that you are logged in to Microsoft Store with the account that owns Levelhead or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

How to check if it is the right account in Microsoft Store:

  1. Search Levelhead in Microsoft Store and go to the game's page
  2. If the account owns the game, you should see "Buy as Gift"
  3. If the account owns Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you should see this instead
  4. Otherwise, you are not logged into the account that can play Levelhead! You need to click on the profile button on the top right to sign out and sign in with the account that owns the game or the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

I’m on Windows 7 and my game keeps crashing!

Check that your Windows 7 version is on the latest patch and that you have DirectX 11 installed.

I’m on Windows 7 and I can’t log in!

Levelhead only supports the latest version of Windows 7 because of network security issues with prior versions. Be sure your Windows 7 version is on the latest patch.

We have several in-game buttons that should open your browser (like Google login and the community links on the main menu). If you click on them and nothing happens, or something weird happens, it's probably because your default HTML viewer is set to something besides your browser. For Windows 10, hit the Windows key, type "default apps" and hit enter, then click on "choose default apps by file type", then make sure that .html is set to use your browser!

The game won’t launch.

If the game fails to launch, it is likely because your antivirus program has incorrectly identified the game as a “threat” and deleted its files or otherwise prevented it from running. If the game won’t launch, whitelist it in your antivirus program, then reinstall it.

I use Riva Tuner Statistic Server and the game won’t launch.

Please close Riva Tuner Statistic Server and the game should be able to launch.

My controller is moving two characters or cursors at once.

If you are using a 3rd party program such as DS4Windows or vJoy to mirror controller inputs to other controller slots (which many Playstation controller users do), you may see multiple cursors in Levelhead and be stuck in co-op mode. Levelhead should not require these 3rd party programs to detect your controller, so you should disable them during Levelhead gameplay to avoid these anomalies.

My game is just showing a black screen.

Make sure that the game is using your dedicated NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA will not always automatically detect this as a game, and it may be stuck trying to play the game with a bad onboard gpu.

The game boots up and then crashes immediately.

This is a rare issue that we've seen caused by specific sound cards not playing well with our engine. Please disable your sound card and try again.

The game is running slowly, stuttering, or hitching

Make sure your OS and video drivers are totally up to date and you're using your dedicated GPU. You can also go into the game's Settings and tweak the graphical settings in a variety of ways, including swapping between Fullscreen and non-Fullscreen modes.

If you are on a 4k monitor and the above doesn't work, you may find that reducing your desktop resolution resolves the issue.

We have also found that with some video cards, running Netflix, Hulu, or other browser-based streaming services -- even in the background, and even while they are paused -- can cause the game to stutter. Try closing down those tabs in your browser and see if that helps!

Last, in some cases, having a monitor with a higher refresh rate than 60hz can cause the game to lag, slow down, or stutter. Try setting your monitor's refresh rate to 60hz.

My Steam controller is behaving weirdly!

If you are using a Steam controller or enabled Steam Inputs, be sure to set the thumbpads to register as joysticks and not mice. Because Levelhead allows users to dynamically switch between mouse and keyboard, Levelhead interprets mouse inputs as a message from the player to switch out of controller mode.

Steam doesn't detect the game as closed after exiting

This is an issue that exists in the Steam client, so we cannot resolve it. If this happens, just reboot Steam.

I have a login issue that's not listed here

There are a few specific login issues described in other entries. If none of those match, see the general Rumpus Help.

I have a problem that’s not listed here

All other issues can be reported here.

When creating a report, be sure to include what version of the game you are playing on, as well as what platform. The more information you give us, the faster we can solve the problem! Note that if you report the issue anywhere else, we will not see it.
