Bscotch Help & Support

Rumpus

What is Rumpus?

Rumpus is the glue that binds together the Butterscotch Universe. It is a login system for our future titles, allowing you to have data portability no matter where you bought your games, and something that blurs the lines between our games, podcast, website, and all other content we create. We'll be adding features over time to let you get the most out of your Bscotch games.

What happened to BscotchID?

Rumpus is the faster, better, stronger descendent of BscotchID. It will eventually replace BscotchID completely, but that's going to be a slow process. We'll do our best to migrate your BscotchID data over to Rumpus. BscotchID was old, slow, and extremely difficult maintain and improve. Rumpus lets us do much more interesting stuff with web-connectivity in our games.

BscotchID is our legacy login system, and it is now a part of Rumpus. BscotchID will eventually be completely phased out and replaced with Rumpus.

The first part of that transition is "BscotchID-Link", which links your BscotchID account to Rumpus. BscotchID-Link automatically connects BscotchID and Rumpus accounts that share an email address and allows you to log into Rumpus using your BscotchID credentials.

How do I get a Rumpus account if I already have BscotchID?

You are already in Rumpus if you have a BscotchID, since BscotchID is transitioning into Rumpus. However, the opposite is not true. If you do not have a BscotchID and want to log into our old games you will have to separately create a BscotchID even if you have a Rumpus account. Use an email address associated with your Rumpus account to make sure they get automatically linked up via BscotchID-Link, otherwise you'll end up with yet another Rumpus account!.

Why can't a I log in with a password?

Rumpus is a completely password-free system. Why? It turns out that passwords are more of a security risk than they are a benefit, because most people choose bad passwords and then immediately forget them. Not you, of course; you choose the most amazing and uncrackable passwords in the universe! But literally everyone else chooses bad passwords, so if we even make that an option then all those other users' accounts will be less secure. See the Security page.

The exception to our no-passwords policy is BscotchID, which we only allow because otherwise some users would completely lose access to their accounts. It's likely we'll phase that option out over time.

We've made login as convenient as possible by allowing logins to work remotely: if you log in using your email or Lookup Code, you can click the confirmation link from any device and still get logged in right where you started. In addition, we allow you to log into Rumpus using all kinds of services, so that you can complete the process in just a few clicks without having to remember anything!

What's a Lookup Code?

While playing our games and using our services, you will likely end up with many different character names and nicknames. Your Rumpus Lookup Code lets your friends find you no matter how many names you have, and no matter how often you change those names. Yeah, your code looks weird, but you won't have to memorize it and that weirdness gives you privacy since no one will be able to guess who you are from your Lookup Code!

What's a Rumpus Alias?

When you joined Rumpus, we gave you a "Rumpus Alias" (you can change it in your account settings). This is the default nickname that you will see on the website and inside our games, but it usually won't be what other users see. You'll end up with character names and other nicknames/aliases depending on the games and services you use, and your fellow players may see those instead.

Your Rumpus Alias is purely cosmetic: you cannot log in with it, and other users cannot look you up using your Alias. That's what the Lookup Code is for!

Your Rumpus Alias (and any other character name or nickname you choose) is subject to our Code of Conduct. We take this extremely seriously; violations of our Code of Conduct may result in temporary or permanent suspension of your account.

I changed my Rumpus Alias on the website, but I see my old Alias elsewhere!

To make sure Rumpus is super fast we cache data all over the place. Sometimes that means you'll make a change somewhere but won't see that change reflected somewhere else. Just give it some time, and everything will be back in sync!

My Rumpus Alias changed, but I didn't do it!

The Rumpus Alias system was deployed on September 21, 2018. If you had a Rumpus account before that time, your Alias was changed along with everyone else's (you can change it again whenever you please).

If your Alias has changed since that time you might have a security issue. You should remotely log out of Rumpus and make sure that no one has access to the 3rd party accounts (email, Google) that you use to log into Rumpus.

Emails aren't arriving

Verification emails should go out seconds after they are triggered, and other emails should be similarly fast. Sometimes things get hung up, but even then should only take minutes. If you are not getting emails you expect to get, something is probably wrong. Things to try:

  • Check your spam folder, promos folder, and trash. If our emails are going somewhere unexpected, tell your email client to put them in the inbox and stop doing that.
  • Add rumpus@bscotch.net to your contact list.
  • If you aren't getting login/registration emails, try again (make sure your email address is typed correctly!).
  • We have had to blacklist some email services because of high bot rates or because the service blocks our emails, so you may need to use a different provider.
  • It's possible our services are misbehaving, so give it some time and try again later.
  • If you were auto-unsubscribed from our newsletters despite not getting any, check the relavent help page.
  • Finally, if we have had trouble sending emails to your account in the past, or you have marked our emails as spam, you may have been blacklisted from our email service. Contact us to get that fixed!

Why is my email provider forbidden?

Some email clients don't play well with Rumpus, usually because they block a large fraction of our emails or preferentially send them to spam. In dramatic cases we block top-level domains (e.g. qq.com) because we can't count on them to accept our emails.

Why did you auto-unsubscribe me from the Ballyhoo?

We only send you emails that you either want or need. It's easy to manage your subscriptions, and we have robots that auto-unsubscribe you if you aren't opening our emails (since we figure you don't want them).

Our robots are doing their best, but sometimes they auto-unsubscribe people who do want our emails. If that's you, one of the following happened:

  1. Your email provider is preventing you from seeing our emails. Emails may be going into spam or a folder you don't normally check, or your provider might be completely blocking them. Make sure rumpus@bscotch.net is in your contact list, re-subscribe, and otherwise use your email provider's support to find out how to keep this from happening.
  2. Your email provider is blocking the images in our emails, probably because you've asked it to. Our robots use those images plus internet magic to determine if you open our emails, and auto-unsubscribe you if you don't open them. If you do want our emails, and also want to continue blocking images, you can opt out of the auto-unsub system via the "Automatic Unsubscribes" section of the newsletter management page.
  3. Something might be broken on our end. If you have been getting and opening our emails, and are not blocking images, then Adam (our web developer) probably did something dumb. Please let him know so we can get it fixed, and otherwise opt out of Automatic Unsubscribes as above.

I can't log into a game

First make sure you're on an up to date copy of your game. After that, look at the numeric error code that shows up when you try to log in, and then find it in our handy error code explainer.

I can't log in using the website

Logins, even from our games, are mediated by this website. If you are having trouble logging in, it's probably because you are blocking features of our site (cookies or Javascript) that are required for logins to work.

If you are seeing a 404 error, it's probably because you're following an expired confirmation link. Make sure you're using the link from the most recent email! (Note that Gmail often hides email contents when they look the same as a prior email -- expand the last email to get the link.)

I have to log in again every time I visit this site

You shouldn't have to! Your credentials are stored locally, so that each time you come back to the browser you'll still be logged in. If it's been a while since you logged in your credentials may have expired. Otherwise, note that credentials are per browser and that the browsers built into apps might not store local data (and will therefore require a new login every time you use them).

When I connect platform and social media accounts, what personal data do you collect?

There are up to three pieces of data we collect from the 3rd party services you connect to your Rumpus account:

  1. The unique user identifier from the service.
  2. A verified email address from that service, when available.
  3. Your public username from that service, when applicable.

We use this information to identify and contact you, and to optionally let you display your 3rd party usernames on our own services.

How do Platform Connections (Cross-Play) work?

Each platform (Steam, Nintendo Switch, the App Store, etc) has its own player network and different limitations for allowing other login systems. Rumpus bridges all platforms by serving as a centralized hub for all your Butterscotch Shenanigans game data. By connecting your Rumpus account to an existing platform account, you'll be able to log into your Rumpus account on that platform. You can also sign into our website using any connected platform accounts. All of this makes signing into Rumpus super simple without sacrificing your data portability.

When you log into Rumpus using a platform account, that account sends us a unique identifier representing you on the platform. We store that identifier so that we know it's you when you log into Rumpus. The platform account may also send us a verified email address. During registration we may add those verified email addresses to your Rumpus account, which you can manage on your account settings page.

Some platforms, such as Steam, double as social networks, and so we may give you the option to make the connected platform account "public", which means that it may show up on your Levelhead profile page or in other publicly visible places.

You can disconnect your platform accounts from Rumpus at any time. When you do, we'll delete the unique identifier we're storing (you'll have to separately delete your email addresses) and you'll no longer have access to your Rumpus data using that platform account.

What does connecting Rumpus to other services do?

You've spent years using other rad services in games and on the Internet. We don't want you to have leave all that cool stuff behind when you play our games and use our services, so we'll try to find useful ways to connect Rumpus (and by extension our games) to existing services. For example, you can put verified social media links up on your Levelhead profile by connecting those social media accounts to Rumpus, so that people who like the levels you make can find you on other services. You can also connect to platform accounts to simplify login and allow you to carry your game progress across platforms.

Privacy is important to us: we treat your data exactly the way we want our own data to be treated. When you connect a 3rd party account to your Rumpus account, we only store exactly the information we need to provide useful functionality to you. By default your username (or other identifiers) are not visible to other users, but you may have the option to make them public. If you mark a connected account as "public" we may display the username for that account, or a link to your profile page for that account, throughout our games and services (such as on your Levelhad profile page).

You can disconnect a connected account at any time, and when you do so we'll immediately delete your username, credentials, and other data obtained from that connected account. Note that some data might still be stored in our logs, backups, or in caches after we have deleted it, so it may take some time to be fully purged from all of our systems.

I lost access to my Rumpus email

Your email addresses and connected platform accounts are what prove an account is yours. If you have lost access to the email address(es) and platform accounts registered to your Rumpus account, there is no way for us to help you. To prevent future heartache with a new account, register backup emails and connect additional platforms via the account settings.

I have multiple Rumpus accounts. Can I merge them?

If you have logged in with different email addresses, you'll end up with different accounts for each. Usually you'll have done that on purpose, but either way you might want those email addresses associated with a single account. There is no way to merge data from multiple accounts, but you can delete the account whose email address you want to free up (via the account settings page), and then add that now-free email address to your preferred account. Per our Terms, only one account per user is supported.

I want to delete my account.

If you don't want your Rumpus or BscotchID accounts anymore you are free to delete them at any time (via the account settings page). Note that this is permanent, so make the decision carefully! To respect your privacy, when you delete your account we will also irreversibily delete or anonymize all connected data according to our Terms and Privacy Policy. Deleting your Rumpus account automatically deletes any BscotchID account connected through BscotchID-Link. You can independently delete your BscotchID account without impacting Rumpus via the "BscotchID-Link" section of the account settings page.

I deleted my account, but now I want it back!

If your account has been deleted, it is gone forever.

Can I use the Rumpus API to make my own software/websites?

It is definitely a violation of our Terms of Service to directly access or manipulate the data being sent to our Rumpus and BscotchID APIs. Only our official clients (our games, websites, etc) are allowed to access our APIs.

That said, we do believe that opening up some access to our services is good for the community. To that end, we have an official API, called Rumpus Community Edition, expressly for the purpose of letting you build your own stuff.
